COMM – Communication Module
The Serial Communication Module – COMM is designed to serve as an interface between microprocessor based devices equipped with serial communication and a computer. This interface is necessary, for instance, when the communication port of the devices is already in use for data interchange between them. This data interchange must operate continuously independently of the host computer, so COMM has 2 serial communication ports, one connected to the microprocessor based equipment, and another connected to the computer. This way, both communication lines become independent, assuring any eventual problem in the connection to the computer, or even a computer stoppage, does not affect the interchange of data between the microprocessor based equipment.
For each device employed, the COMM must have specific internal software. For instance, in the case of the COMM-01, the software is prepared for the communication with the old style Temperature Monitors MT1 and MT2 (new versions TM1 and TM2 dispense the use of COMM module, as they already have an independent serial port for connection to a computer). The COMM-04 version is used with the Synchronous Paralleling Supervisors SPS, whose use with a COMM module is mandatory. The COMM-04 can also be used with the Position Indicator PI to allow communication with a supervisory system using the protocol DNP3.0. Additional versions for application with other equipment may be available.
